Abstract:

Introduction: Nuclear moisture density gauges are widely used in construction industry in different countries across the world, including Ghana, on a large scale. Like all irradiating devices, the nuclear gauges should be subjected to radiation safety assessment based on radiation protection and safety principles. Regarding this, the objective of this research was to investigate the radiation safety of the nuclear moisture density gauges to ensure the absence of any leakages from the radioactive source. Material and Methods: For the purpose of the study, a survey meter (RADOS-120) was used to measure and record the radiation dose once at a distance of 1 m from the surfaces of all sides of the nuclear moisture density gauge and very close distance from the surfaces of the device. Moreover, the device was examined using radiation contamination test and counts on a standard block. Results: A total of nine nuclear moisture density gauges manufactured by Troxler Electronics Inc. in the USA were evaluated within a period of 3 years. The minimum and maximum average dose rates were 0.49 and 66.67 μSv/h, respectively. The highest and lowest average dose rates were recorded in 2017 and 2016 on the devices with serial numbers of 38260 and 32839, respectively. Conclusion: The assessment of the nuclear moisture density gauges under study revealed noradiation contamination leakage. Furthermore, all the evaluated gauges were shown to function properly and were safe for the intended purposes.

Some steps towards establishing a tertiary standard dosimetry laboratory at a radiotherapy department

Background: In order to deliver the precise dose to the target in radiotherapy, absorbed dose to water at the reference point should be assessed. When the calibration procedure is performed for a reference dosimeter in the 60Co beam of a Secondary Standard Dosimetry Laboratory (SSDL), the total uncertainty in absorbed dose to water (Dw) is estimated to be approximately 1.5%. This study attempts...

In Vivo Dosimetry Using a Flat Surface Sun Nuclear Corporation Diode in 60co Beams for Some Radiotherapy Treatments in Ghana

Introduction: One of the useful standard quality assurance techniques in radiation therapy is monitoring entrance doses in in-vivo dosimetry. An overall tolerance limit of 5% of the absorbed radiation dose has been recommended by the International Commission of Radiological Units. The implementation of an in vivo dosimet...

the role of application of dynamic assessment approach in improvement of iranian efl writing performance at different language proficiency levels

the present study sought to investigate the role of dynamic assessment (da) in improvement of iranian efl writing performance at different language proficiency levels. to this end, after conducting the quick placement test, 60 iranian efl learners were assigned to two groups with different language proficiency levels. in both groups each participant wrote two compositions, one before and one af...

Retrospective dosimetry using fingernail in nuclear industries: A review paper

Generally, doses greater than 2Gy can produce acute biological effects in humans. For this reason, to measure and record the cumulative dose, especially in radiation users, the need for a personal dosimeter has been strongly felt by the researchers. The purpose of this study is to introduce retrospective dosimetric techniques, in particular the use of nails as a natural tool for determining cum...

assessment of deep word knowledge in elementary and advanced iranian efl learners: a comparison of selective and productive wat tasks

testing plays a vital role in any language teaching program. it allows teachers and stakeholders, including program administrators, parents, admissions officers and prospective employers to be assured that the learners are progressing according to an accepted standard (douglas, 2010). the problems currently facing language testers have both practical and theoretical implications but the first i...
